West Burton: EDF Group’s 49 MW mega-battery helps to balance the electricity grid in the United Kingdom

On Friday 22th June, EDF Renewables announced the commissioning of a 49 MW battery at the West Burton B site in the United Kingdom to provide frequency regulation across the electricity grid. In this project, on behalf of Nidec, EDF Store & Forecast provided the energy management system (EMS) that autonomously controls the battery to optimize performance and meet all technical requirements set by National Grid.

West Burton is a project built by EDF Renewables in UK that is co-located with the West Burton B combined-cycle gas plant in Nottinghamshire county. The storage site (49 MW–24,5 MWh) is made up of 20 industrial containers, each with 2.45 MW of li-ion battery capacity provided by Nidec. This is the largest battery storage project in Europe to date.

The EMS installed by EDF Store & Forecast controls the operation of the storage project. While respecting the rules of the electricity grid operator and dynamic constraints at the site, the EMS dispatches the battery when frequency is too low on the grid, and stores energy when frequency is too high.

Battery storage as a help for balancing electricity grid

This solution allows National Grid to access reserve capacity to correct fluctuations on the grid within less than a second. West Burton was one of the projects awarded in a request for proposals by National Grid to establish a system of frequency regulation that totals 200 MW across the country.

West Burton is now the second frequency regulation EMS solution provided by EDF Store & Forecast, after the Mc Henry project built in 2015 in the United States, which both contribute to the safety and continuity of electricity supply in wide areas.

Today, EDF Store & Forecast contributes to the optimization of battery and microgrid projects in France, the United States, and the United Kingdom, representing a total production capacity of 47 MW and storage capacity of 77 MW.
